Glossary
Achene : A dry, one-seeded fruit that does not split open; common in
the sunflower and buttercut plant families.
Axil : The angle formed between two attached plant parts,
e.g. leaves on the main stem.
Bale : A large, bound package of raw material. (A cotton bale
weighs 480 pounds.)

Coffee : Coffea arabica.
Disk flowers : The tiny tubular flowers at the center of the
flower-head in members of the sunflower plant family. Often surrounded by ray
flowers.
Epidermis : The outer layer of cells or skin of various plant
parts.
Generic
name : The genus name, always capitalized. It should be italicized,
but sometimes is not when
it appears without the species name. The generic
name is frequently abbreviated to a single letter, as in "H. annus.."
Ovule : The basil part of the flower which contains the
seeds.
Perennial : A plant that lives for more than two years.
Ray flowers : The petal-like flowers on the outside of the
flower-head in many species of the sunflower plant family.
Species : the smallest taxonomic unit defining a group of
animals or plants that are unable to breed to produce fertile offspring.
Sunflower : Heliathus annus, important food and dye plant
of North America and now Russia.
